Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some questions that people ask me:

  • HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

Session by session fees are $150 for the first 60 minute appointment, then $100 per 50 minute appointment. Program cost varies based on length of program and amount of time/services packed into that time.

  • HOW LONG DOES THERAPY LAST?

One method of figuring this out is 1 month of “healing” for each year you’ve been dealing with the problem. My goal is to help you acquire skills and tools that can help you continue to heal on your own after our time together.

  • DO YOU TAKE INSURANCE?

Not at this time. I am happy to provide you with a “superbill”, a receipt you can submit to your insurance company for reimbursement. However, you’ll want to contact them ahead of time so you’re not surprised by their policy (each insurance company is different).

  • WHAT IF I DON’T LIVE IN SAINT GEORGE? CAN I STILL WORK WITH YOU?

I do have the capability of doing phone sessions, or even better, online sessions with clients. The electronic records system I use has a HIPPA compliant online video capability. (This basically means that it’s a secure connection that can protect your privacy.)

You will need a good internet connection in order to do online sessions. At this time I haven’t had a client be able to do online sessions with an iPad, so if that is your only option it might not work for you.

Working with children is a different matter… I can talk to kids online, but it’s harder to play through a screen… So depending on the age of your child, it may or may not be a possibility.

  • WHAT ARE YOU DOING WHEN YOU PLAY WITH KIDS?

Research has shown that one of the main “therapeutic” ingredients in therapy is the relationship between YOU and ME. (Adults too!) This is one thing that’s going on during play.

I am also observing the child during the process – how she makes decisions, how she involves me in the play, what she chooses, and so much more.

I do a little talking with kids based on their understanding, but the teaching I do also involves play – for example teaching them something to do (pay attention to the breath by putting one hand on your belly and one hand on your chest and see which one moves more).

I also use art, which can engage both the right and left hemisphere of the brain as the child explains what is going on in the picture, leading to understanding and some degree of resolution.

  • WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN DOING HOURLY SESSIONS AND DOING A PROGRAM?

*Predictability verses flexibility. Programs have a defined cost, a defined length and number of sessions (with some flexibility). You know what to expect and can plan accordingly. Hourly sessions offer a bit more flexibility with time, and if you’re uncertain of your needs and capabilities to pay this is a good option.

*Potential increased commitment. Programs help clients commit to coming to therapy for a specific period of time. For big problems, it really does take more than 3 months to get to a place where you’re functioning at your best. Sometimes we get busy and prioritize things based on the amount of pain they’re causing us. If we have no commitment to a certain time frame, it’s easier to let things go and take care of the next emergency… sometimes before we are really ready to be done.

  • DO YOU WORK WITH COUPLES?

I enjoy using Dr. John Gottman’s work along with other mindfulness and cognitive behavioral techniques with couples. However, MOST of my work is NOT done with couples. I’m happy to work with you if you’d like, and happy to refer you to another experienced therapist if you request it.
